This work log is for the week of November 14^th to November 18^th.

This week in the hookah bar organization, we met up at our regular meeting time and discussed the marketing survey. We didn’t get our 25 submissions from the whole group so we are going to postpone our deadline for the survey. I put the questions in a group message on Facebook last weekend to try to get submissions from some of my friends. Only three people responded back to me by Wednesday and only one actually answered all of the questions. I got some feedback about one question in particular, the household income. I talked to Li about it since he is in charge of the survey research. Instead of coming up with another question or changing the actual survey we decided that we can use the income question if people decide to answer it, if not we will not stress that part of the survey. Every school or job doesn’t ask about race or income, so I don’t think it will make or break the project. This Thanksgiving week I will take advantage of the holidays and get some family members to help out and give us some responses. I should have all of my five and maybe more by the end of this week. For next week I will collaborate with the group so we can edit our midterm project report. We have a lot to reconfigure as far as the structure of our document goes, so it should not be too much for us to come together and reproduce a cleaner report. We will be working on it together on GoogleDocs. We have a meeting on Tuesday at 3:30 to finish up our editing and proofread as a group before we turn in the document by Wednesday.

This work log is for the week of November 4^th to November 11^th.

This week in the hookah bar organization, we met up with all members multiple times which is something that we haven’t done with the project thus far. We had our midterm project report to turn in on Wednesday November 9th so I was assigned last week at the class meeting to pull together research from all of the interior design work I have been doing. I made some decisions about lighting and furniture and eventually had to downsize my portfolio of different pieces to the few essential products that the group thought were most important to have. I also had to consult with my team members when it came to producing an estimate for hardwood floor renovations. Allie told me that our feasibility plan had total renovation costs put down for $25,000 and I got an official estimate from Craftsmen’s Network that it should cost approximately $15,708. That leaves us a good amount left over to redo windows, awnings, and other miscellaneous touch ups. For next week I have to distribute Li’s survey to at least five of my friends so we can add it to the marketing strategy. We will meet up again around five on Wednesday as well.

This work log is for the week of October 28^th to November 4^th.

Our group held another meeting this week to discuss our progress with the project and talk about the upcoming midterm project plan document. I gave everybody my ideas on the interior and we’re going to stick with the red and gold color scheme for the interior design. At the meeting we also discussed how we would split up the work for the next document we’re supposed to hand in and for the midterm document I am going to have to get a full write up of what furniture we will put inside the bar as far as bar stools, tables, patio heaters, patio seating, booths, chairs, and couches. I found a company that has really good quality products for lighting arrangements and furniture pieces. I want to try and get as many pieces from this company as possible in order to make it easier for us to tally up costs and have a consistent look about the bar space. I also got visuals of most of the designs I want to work with, and Ali suggested that I do the same thing I did with the menu designs and upload another slide show to our groups WordPress blog. I’ll have that by Tuesday which is our next meeting time where we will bring together all of our pieces to the midterm document which is due the next class period.

Smith, Weekly Contribution, Week 19 to 26th

This week my team met up for an hour before class and reported on all of our research findings for the week. I made a few decisions about what I want to do with color schemes and whatnot, but I plan next week to bring some ideas to the meeting for us to officially vote on. Since Ali found an official place for us this week I can now get started on finding out patio space and furniture for the inside. I found a pretty good company for us to order outdoor heaters from and we can probably get seating arrangements squared away using the same companies’ products. For next week our group is going to work on getting our budget together and figuring out how much money we really have available to spend on different things like supplies for the bar, alcohol and food expenses, interior decoration expenses, and renovation costs as well. I will have things together next week as far as what kind of colors we want, different supplies we can add to the interior, and menu design as well. Also at the meeting we all went through the final draft of the Organization Plan document that we edited for this week. After going through it and making some minor changes we submitted it via email before class. Next week we will have a better understanding of our finances and we plan to move forward with figuring out budget plans and expenses altogether.

Work Log–Smith Oct.14-21

This report is in regards to the week of October 14^th through October 21^st in the hookah bar organization.

 

This week our group has been focused on gathering information for locations near theCentral West Endwhere we will be opening the hookah bar. I went down to check out the area and see exactly what the neighborhood vibe was like where we were looking to set up shop. My group members all mentioned the area around Coffee Cartel and Drunken Fish where there is a good amount of traffic for the local bars and restaurants and also where there could be a lot of potential ‘hookah smokers’. Getting a feel for the environment and a better clue of what the shop would look like, I went ahead and picked out a format for the menus we were hoping to create for the bar. I made a slideshow on the blog last week and the one I think fits best will be the “Mocambo” design just because it is not too fancy, its rather simple but it also has some subtle antique elegance to it, which would match the overall theme of the bar and its setting.

 

For next week I am probably going to be in touch with Thom and Ali to help out in finishing editing our groups Organization Plan document. I will also continue to gather information on locations, get started on interior design schemes, and begin creating the actual menus for the hookah bar which requires me to work in the Communication Lab in Xavier hall. So with fall break coming up I might not have a draft by the end of next week but we will see how it goes.

Work Log–Smith Oct. 7-14

This report is in regards to the week of October 7th to October 14th within the Hookah bar organization.

This week I met with my group members and helped organize and develop our organization plan for the hookah bar. I added input for my personal goals which consist of using this project to assist me in further developing my professional communication skills. I want to be able to take all the tasks and duties assigned to me in this project to prepare me for the real world experience of writing and discussing business plans.

I also got a good start on putting together some things for the interior design aspect of  our project which is the specific job I have been assigned to since being hired by Ali. Using our group’s technological communication device which is another blog for our group on WordPress; I uploaded a slide show of different designs I think would be good for us to use for menus in the bar. I put the images up on the blog and asked my group members to offer feedback in the comment box below. For the menus I would actually like to take one or two of the designs our group agrees that is best and use some graphic design program from Adobe or Photoshop to recreate our own design for the actual menu for the bar. I have some experience using the programs so I am sure it won’t be too hard to actually come up with a good design without having to hire outside help.
